goals4kids – Workshop Life Skills

11. Juni 2011

The first goals4kids life skills workshop in the office of our partner Impumelelo was well attended and ran successfully. Only two children were absent. The other fourteen children were fetched by bus and driven from Atlantis to Cape Town.
The session started at 9am and workshop facilitator, Patti Bruyns, provided each child with their own name tag and reading materials. Patti connected well with them and fully engaged their attention throughout the morning. The children freely participated in the discussions and even surprised Patti with the emotional depth of their responses.
This workshop was an introductory session. Patti focused on building trust with the group and getting them to feel comfortable with sharing their feelings with one another. There were several opportunities for play with fun group exercises in between more serious discussions. Self esteem was the theme of the morning and the main group discussions. Group leaders were chosen and reported back to everyone about what their group discussed.
Questionnaires at the end provided each participant with the opportunity for individual reflection. They answered general questions about themes discussed and gave feedback about their experiences during the session. This information will provide Patti with more insight into each child as she already started connecting with different children individually.
After the lunch the children left on the bus for Atlantis.
