Mr. Tomas Kanovsky, Director of goals4kids, traveled to Cape Town mid of April to discuss further projects, to meet with those children sponsored by goals4kids, to inquire the principals about their school results, and to visit those schools that should receive soccer goals from goals4kids.
In addition to discussions with Mrs Rhoda Kadalie, Director of Impumelelo, the meeting with those children sponsored by goals for kids was in the focus of the second day. A barbeque in the afternoon –called Braai in South Africa was organized for this purpose near Atlantis, the township where the children live. Those children have almost no opportunity to get out of Atlantis otherwise. That meant a welcome change for the children, in particular since the Braai took place at a beach on the Atlantic Ocean. During long talks with the children on that afternoon, it can be said that they have incredible ambition and motivation to rank among the best at school despite the fact that they are facing worst of poverty and are coming from broken families. This opens up whole new pathways to study later at universities and to give them prospect of a better future.
The day before, Mr. Tomas Kanovsky visited the principals of the schools Robinvale High, Atlantis High and Proteus High to inquire about the school results of the children. All of the principals acknowledged the children’s desire to progress and to count among the best in their individual age group, also thanks to the support provided by goals4kids.
Mr. Tomas Kanovsky met four selected families at their homes to also learn how the children live there: smallest rooms, some sleep together with grand parents and siblings in one room, no heating and an environment not very inviting to spend time outside. Nevertheless, the children do not complain about these circumstances, quite the contrary, this serves as an incentive for them to achieve in life and have a better future. The computers sponsored by goals4kids make them especially happy and they are cherished like buried treasures.
At the end of the trip, Mr. Tomas Kanovsky visited schools in the township Kensington as well as the Visserhoek elementary school near Durbanville together with Mrs Denise Robinson, a member of the South African Parliament to gain an impression about the local “soccer fields” and to talk to principals about possibilities to receive soccer goals.
